We went exploring last Sunday, as a part of the Doors Open Denver event; my favorite place we visited was the Daniels and Fisher Tower (built in 1910), where we took an elevator up to the 17-20th floors and got to see the inside of the 4 clock faces, along with some great views of Denver. I am a sucker for gears and angles and artistic mechanical sights, so I was excited to gain access to such a cool old building. The basement houses Lannie’s Clocktower Cabaret, and after seeing their decor of old clock collections and crazy chandeliers made of boots and clocks and beads and more, we must plan on going to a show there some day.

Mark and I went exploring around Denver last Sunday as a part of Doors Open Denver weekend. We saw some great old architecture and some newly remodeled/repurposed old buildings that are now architectural studios, literary club homes, museums, and more.

We went into the basement of Union Station, and found some intriguing collections by Model Railroad Clubs….the detail is amazing, though my pictures didn’t turn out all that well. It was like stepping into another world in that basement.

The lobby of the Daniels and Fisher Clocktower (c. 1910, above), and some views of Denver and 16th Street mall from the top of the tower (below).

I just happened to be browsing etsy and noticed the term “steampunk” used in several descriptions. As I had never heard of this before, I was intrigued by my subsequent google search…..I found some interesting videos and images of people who create works of art that fall into this genre….sort of a Victorian-era translation/interpretation of modern day technogarb.

Here is a great video about a guy who makes Victorian-looking modern day computers:
